5 Sporting Events After the Olympics to Look Forward To

The pandemic not only halted the world, but it also took the Olympics to a rough start. Fortunately, although originally expected to be held in 2020, the Tokyo Olympics has finally concluded. It was a successful season and another best achievement for the Filipinos – taking home one gold, two silvers, and one bronze medal, and landing the 50th spot in the 2020 medal rankings.

The Olympics may be over, but there are still a lot more sporting events to look forward to. Watch out for non-sports fans out there, perhaps these events could transform you into one!

NBA 2021-22 Regular Season

NBA 2021-22 Regular Season

It is no secret that the pandemic largely impacted the sports industry and some major sporting events, including the National Basketball Association (NBA) and its 2020-21 season. NBA is a professional basketball league formed in the United States and is among the top three largest sports leagues (by revenue) in the world as of 2020. The start of the NBA’s 2020-21 season was delayed due to the COVID-19 situation and the NBA could not help but postpone more than 30 games, while also reducing the typical 82 regular-season games down to 72. But after being disrupted by the pandemic for two seasons, it is expected that the league would return to its regular calendar for the NBA 2021-22 regular season.

Basketball fans can look forward to the start of the NBA’s 76th season, which will begin on the 19th of October this year, and conclude on the 10th of April 2022.

Tokyo 2020 Summer Paralympics

Though the Olympics finally concluded, Tokyo, Japan is not yet done hosting the 2020 games. The Olympics and Paralympics are two of the biggest international sporting events that occur every four years. Some may be confused about telling the two events apart, but the primary difference is that the participants in the Olympics are able-bodied, while participants in the Paralympics are affected by physical, vision, and/or intellectual impairments. Originally, the Paralympics started as a way to help wounded soldiers during World War II, then it turned into a recreational sport with friendly competition and eventually became the Paralympics it is today.

The Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games will begin on the 24th of August and end on September 5th, 2021. Disabled athletes from different countries of origin will compete in 22 Paralympic sports, with Badminton and Taekwondo included for the first time. This sporting event is one of the many events out there that provide opportunities for athletes to experience a fair and square competition – showing the world that no disability can hinder an individual’s dreams; all it takes is a strong determination and mind.

2022 Super Bowl LVI

The Super Bowl is an annual championship football game of the National Football League (NFL) between the best team of the National Football Conference and the American Football Conference. Unlike other sports leagues wherein the champion is decided in a series of games, the NFL decides its champion with only one; essentially the final game of the NFL season, which is called the Super Bowl.

American Football is known as a popular sport, so it’s not a shock that this annual event is considered as one of the largest and most viewed annual sporting events in the United States as this is the time when football fans can unite and cheer for their teams. Moreover, the Super Bowl is usually held on Sundays, so even non-football fans can join the fun. And although it is not an official holiday, many people treat it like a national holiday.

Football fan or not, anyone can enjoy the 56th Super Bowl which will be held on February 13, 2022, at the newly-built SoFi Stadium in California. For Filipinos, check out CBSSports.com or the CBS Sports app where the game can be streamed live.

Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics

This may be unknown to some people, but the Olympics has two editions and happens in two seasons: the Summer Olympics and the Winter Olympics. The Olympic Games are usually held every four years, alternating between the two editions every two years in the four-year period. The major difference between the Summer and Winter Olympics is the games played specifically in that particular season. For the Winter Olympics, games performed on ice or snow are featured (winter sports), such as ice skating, ice hockey, figure skating, skiing, snowboarding, and many other sports that can only be done during the winter.

The 2020 Summer Olympics may be over and won’t be happening again until four years later, but fret not because there is still a sporting event to look forward to. The 2022 Winter Games will be held from February 4 to 20, 2022 in Beijing, China. Until then, let us support our aspiring Filipino Olympians and hope to secure a spot in the upcoming Winter Games.

The 2022 FIFA World Cup

The World Cup is an international football tournament managed by FIFA that also only happens every four years. While the World Cup and the Super Bowl are both “football” sporting events, the major distinction between the two is that the Super Bowl is largely an American experience and makes use of the hands instead of the feet while the FIFA World Cup is a competition against 32 nations and makes use of their feet. Though there may be quite a few Super Bowl fans in other countries as well, the World Cup has a more international appeal, with its fanbase stretching across the globe. Despite the Super Bowl being the most viewed annual sporting event, the World Cup has a bigger global audience and has the record of the highest-ever viewed sporting event.

For die-hard football fans, the World Cup is more than just a game. Football is the most played and watched sport in the world. For many, the World Cup has a deeper significance than a mere football competition, hence the reason why it is one of the most anticipated sporting events. If you are one of those people who are really looking forward to FIFA’s next football tournament, Qatar will be holding the 2022 FIFA World Cup from November 21 until December 18, 2022.

Sports events are really unpredictable. Not knowing what will happen, how the game will end, and who will take the trophy home – all of these are what make people hooked into watching sports. No matter how hard you try to guess the winner, it will take you on a rollercoaster turn of events with no certain ending; it captures the audience as if they are a part of the team.

More interestingly, these events connect people from all over the world and unite different cultures, setting aside every individual’s differences and just judging athletes based on their skills. Sportsmanship is displayed, and losses and wins are witnessed. But at the end of the day, no matter what the outcome is, these sporting events unite people and form unexpected bonds and relationships
