New Movies to Watch in the 2022 Holiday Season

By: Gabriel Javellana

Once again the holidays are here and two of the most awaited end-of-the-year occasions, Halloween and Christmas, are eagerly awaited by many. Of course, the annual deals and promos in recreational areas such as malls are one of the many things that everyone looks at and the clearance section is the most attractive, due to its low price to clear out the remaining inventory.

But, for some, it is the movie releases that are fit for the occasion. Not only are the vacation leaves being opted for to chill and rest after a long year grind at their work and school stuff, but the movies add more to that relaxing time.

The end of every year is always the biggest marketing point for any movie studio looking to bank in their target audiences. The holiday season brings in the biggest money and profit because of the people’s bonuses and spending time with the family is a huge opportunity for bonding time at the movies.

We Have Created a List of the Best Movies to Look Out for at the End of the Year and Each One Is an Enjoyable Treat for Families.

Your loved ones will surely enjoy the upcoming movies that will be released in theaters and on your favorite streaming services. So grab your coziest outfits and your snacks to enjoy an escape in the world of film.

Avatar: The Way of the Water

This movie has been anticipated for a very long time. The awaited sequel to 2009’s first-ever box office to hit that one billion dollars worldwide gross will finally appear in theaters this Christmas.

James Cameron is a revolutionary director for sci-fi and his first movie has blown away audiences with its amazing CGI, which still holds up to this day. The filming process for the sequel is over 12 years in the making and still continues to this day since the studio 20th Century Studios (previously affiliated with Fox before the Disney buyout) allowed the crew to film multiple sequels back-to-back. So it is slated that a 3rd and 4th movie will come out very soon.

When the trailer dropped for this movie, it was indeed a spectacle. Cameron developed new ways to enhance their signature CGI designs by filming motion capture performances underwater, the overall topic and world-focus in the title. Instead of creating virtual water and filming their actors in a water simulation, he trained everyone to do it in actual water. Not much of the plot was explained in the trailer, but many years have passed in the first film and Jake Sully and his new Na’Vi family have ventured more into the world of Pandora.

Cameron and his writing team focused more on expanding the world and it looks gorgeous. Certainly, it will be an amazing experience to witness it in IMAX Cinemas.

Halloween Ends

The final film in this quasi-reboot trilogy will arrive in October. From the title itself, this will be the finale of Michael Myers and Laurie Strode’s (Jamie Lee Curtis) endless battle.

Continuing four years after the events of the previous film, Halloween Kills, Michael Myers is more enraged than ever before. It is Halloween, perfect for the holiday itself, and the franchise is well-known for its creative kills, just like its slasher peers (Friday the 13th, Texas Chainsaw, A Nightmare on Elm Street).

Halloween Kills is looking like another slashing, fun time for the spooktober time.

Black Adam

This movie has been in the making for a long time and it is one of the passionate projects that Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson has been working for. Based on the titular DC Comics character, he is one of the popular villains and anti-heroes of that universe.

If Joker is to Batman, Lex Luthor to Superman, Black Adam is the nemesis of Shazam and his family. That is one of the main reasons for the existence of this movie, in order for Zachary Levi’s Shazam to finally brawl with Dwayne Johnson as Black Adam. Besides Black Adam’s introduction into the DCEU, the Justice Society of America will finally debut on the screen, as they are the precursor to the iconic Justice League.

Hawkman and Doctor Fate, another bunch of iconic comic book characters, and a couple of others will also debut in live-action and will interact with Black Adam’s ruthless actions on the big screen. It is going to be a spectacle of god-like powers and causing major destruction with Earth as their playground and it is going to be a fun holiday time in the theaters once it comes out in October.

You can also check out DC League of Super Pets which was released last July 29, 2022.

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is going through a rough patch lately with its Phase 4 efforts. Their current trend on quantity versus quality across their films and TV Shows on Disney+ has shown a lot of downtrend after the first few films and series at the beginning of the “Multiverse Saga” as Kevin Feige and his team finally classified it.

Spider-Man: No Way Home, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, WandaVision, and the first season of Loki were the only ones that showed quality so far, while the rest were a mixed bag of potential for the new era of Marvel and maybe, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever may be the film to pick up the middle pieces to end off this phase in a beautiful manner.

There is no denying that a hole has been punched into the hearts of many after Chadwick Boseman’s passing. He has embodied the titular Black Panther in live-action perfectly and it is bittersweet, but beautiful that the sequel continues on. Ever since the trailer dropped, it offered a different vibe than the lively movies that the MCU has gotten.

They are honoring the memories of T’Challa and the actor in the plot and the kingdom of Wakanda for what new things Marvel has brought to the screen. Finally, introduced into the MCU is Namor, Marvel’s first-ever mutant character, originating from Atlantis. Namor will be the central antagonist to this movie and mostly, the plot will revolve around the world-building of Wakanda and Atlantis, and of course, setting up more of the storylines that Marvel will build up to in Phase 5 of this universe.

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’s release date has yet to come out, but it is expected this November.

Disenchanted

This was a major surprise when this was announced and Disney fans everywhere immediately took notice. Almost all of the original cast and crew return for this sequel and the trailer garnered a lot of views and hits on social media.

Disenchanted takes place 15 years after the first film and the main characters moved from Manhattan to Monroeville for a change of pace from their urban lifestyle.

The plot shown in the trailer is that Giselle wishes for the typical fairy tale story that she is used to, but instead becomes the stereotypical stepmother. So, the sequel title makes sense and it looks like it will be a fun time for fans who have been clamoring for a sequel to Enchanted for a long time.

Disenchanted will be exclusively released on Disney+ this November.

Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery

Photo from imdb.com

If you love mystery and “whodunit” type of movies, then this movie is right up your alley. This standalone sequel to the 2019 hit, continues the journey of Detective Benoit Blanc, played excellently by Daniel Craig. Benoit Blanc is becoming the modern times’ Sherlock Holmes and Hercule Poirot, with just a tiny dash of comedic writing.

This movie is a standalone follow-up, so audiences have no problem jumping into this immediately without prior knowledge of the first one. Although, the first film is a must-watch for great writing and acting by the ensemble cast, which also extends the sequel’s lineup.

With an ensemble of supporting casts, Edward Norton, Kathryn Hahn, Leslie Odom Jr., Dave Bautista, Ethan Hawke, Kate Hudson, Jessica Henwick, and Janelle Monae are the current cast for the suspects in this murder mystery and the trailer shows the same tone and direction brought by Rian Johnson from the 2019 movie.

Catch Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery exclusively on Netflix this December! A fun Christmas movie for the holidays with a bit of murder.

Babylon

Photo from imdb.com

This movie is shaping up to be another Oscar nominee from its looks, aesthetics, and overall plot. Babylon is centered around the 1920s era of Hollywood, during the transition from silent films (e.g. Charlie Chaplin’s earliest works) to movies with sounds, “talkies” as it was called before.”

The epic period comedy-drama film has an all-star cast: Margot Robbie, Brad Pitt, and Tobey Maguire, the former two starred previously in a Hollywood period piece in Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon A Time in Hollywood. The movie is directed by Damien Chazelle, who has brought us amazing hits centering on jazz as the central music tone throughout his filmography, like La La Land and Whiplash. The film will be his first debut into an R-rated classification since the trailer showed glimpses into the chaos that ensues behind the scenes of the Golden Age of Hollywood.

Catch Babylon in theaters this December 2022.

Here Are Some Movies That Might Grab Your Interest or Have a Splash of Nostalgia During the Holidays:

A Christmas Carol (1984 and 2009)

The ever-loved classic to watch in the holidays. Originally published as a novella by Charles Dickens, A Christmas Carol is the story of Scrooge, a miser of a man who hates anything fun – and most of all, Christmas – is visited by the ghost of his former business partner Jacob Marley, who warns him to change his ways. After ignoring the ghost of his friend’s heed, Scrooge is visited by the spirits of Christmas Past, Present, and Yet to Come and goes on an adventure that transforms him into a kind and gentle man. Both movie versions of the story are worth the watch.

Love Hard (2021)

For those looking for a new rom-com, Love Hard is one of Netflix’s holiday films that tells the story of a young woman in search of romance and meets a young man on a dating app that could be too good to be true. After months of being in a long-distance relationship – without having any real-time video calls – she decides to pay him a visit in his family home and surprise him for the holidays, only to find out that she has been catfished.

The Home Alone film tells the story of eight-year-old Kevin McCallister is mistakenly left at home while the family heads off for their traditional holiday trip. His excitement of finally having every kid’s dream come true was cut when two men plan to rob every house in the neighborhood, including the McCallister home. And he takes it upon himself to protect his family home in the most creative and wacky way possible.

The Nightmare Before Christmas

The most beloved, and the stop-motion animated film that influenced a generation of rock and roll, The Nightmare Before Christmas is an iconic stop-motion, animated musical, dark fantasy directed by Henry Selick, and produced and created by the legendary Tim Burton. The film tells the story of Jack Skelling, the “Pumpkin King” of Halloweentown becomes bored of scaring people in the “real world”, then stumbles upon Christmastown and plots to bring Christmas under his domain by kidnapping and becoming Santa Clause. It is a fun family film that everyone would enjoy, especially the adults who grew up watching Tim Burton’s films.
