Getting to Know Padel

By: Patricia Soberano

People nowadays find a hobby that will match their interests, and perhaps a good addition to their daily exercise. The reason why, being close to or accessible to gyms, courts, studios, and even golf courses are frequently included when people search for the ideal lot for sale in Cavite.

Given that the majority of people choose regular sports (basketball, volleyball, swimming, etc.), it seems inevitable that some people would choose to try something new and become acquainted with the different sports that are available.

Tennis and golf are two athletic activities that have been practiced often recently by a variety of people in different places, particularly by influencers or celebrities. However, it cannot be denied that such a sport requires a certain level of skills, which some people do not want.

Fortunately, there are other sports that can be regarded as being sufficiently similar to other sports that already exist. One of these is a sport known as Padel, which has long been the fastest-growing sport in the world.

What is Padel?

Padel is a sport that mixes physical activity with joy and camaraderie. It’s an excellent sport for people of all ages and abilities since it’s quick and simple to learn.

Padel is a racket sport that is perpetually played in doubles on a closed court. The ball can bounce against the glass wall or steel mesh that surrounds the court, resembling a mix between tennis and squash. The sport usually takes place outside, even on a surface that is as flat and wide as a new lot for sale in Cavite.

Enrique Corcuera, a squash player in Mexico, updated his squash court to include aspects of platform tennis in 1969, and this is how Padel was born. Padel is today regarded as one of the most prominent sports in Spain, where it was introduced by a Spanish friend of Corcuera in the 1970s. Padel sport is also popular in Mexico, Argentina, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

Padel is an excellent sport for men, women, and young people to compete in together because it is not as dominated by power, skill, and serve as it is in tennis. Match craft is a crucial talent since it takes planning to win points rather than brute force and power.

Padel Courts (Size and Walls)

A Padel court measures 20 meters long by 10 meters wide, with glass back walls that rise to a height of 3 meters and end at 4 meters.

Walls composed of wire mesh, concrete, or glass enclose it. Artificial turf, wood, cement, or concrete are all acceptable flooring materials. A 4-meter-high iron mesh is used to close off the remaining portions of the court.

The Padel court is divided into two by a net in the center of the playing area. Its greatest height is 88 cm in the middle and 92 cm on either side. The service area is then delineated by a second line three meters from the back wall, which divides these fields in the center.

Moreover, all-glass indoor courts are becoming more and more common, but they typically use the same supplies as outdoor courts.

Padel Racket and Ball

The sport is enjoyable and addictive to play because it is simple to pick up quickly.

Similar to tennis or squash, Padel uses balls and rackets as its playing tools. These, however, differ a little. The balls have a tennis ball appearance. To avoid the ball bouncing too much, though, their internal pressure is a little lower.

The padel racket, unlike a tennis or squash racket, has a firm hitting surface, thus you can immediately tell the difference in the rackets. The absence of strings on the padel racket is also one of its primary distinguishing features. High-end padel rackets are constructed of EVA or foam for the core and carbon, fiberglass, and Kevlar for the frame. Padel rackets that are lighter are simpler to control while heavier ones enable stronger shots. Basically, the name of the sport is derived from how it resembles a paddle.

In contrast to traditional tennis, shots are played either before or after the ball bounces against the surrounding glass walls.

Padel Rules: How to Play

Here are the Padel rules that each and every Padel tennis player should be aware of:

Service in Padel

  • Upon a draw, the right to serve first is determined.
  • The way to serve is to bounce the ball off the ground and strike it diagonally into the opposing side of the service box.
  • When striking the ball, it must be at or below waist level.

Scoring in Padel

  • Padel scores similarly to tennis: 15, 30, 40, game.
  • A deuce is 40-40.

Padel Clothing and Other Equipment

Padel is an agility game that calls for swift court movements from players. As a result, it’s essential that athletes wear apparel that will give them the flexibility of movement required by the sport.

Men choose padel shirts that are lightweight and made of breathable material since they help the players stay cool during heated matches. Padel is often played outside in the heat of the sun, thus it’s crucial to stay cool while competing. For the same reason, women choose singlets and tanks made of breathable clothing.

The first club to introduce Padel as a social sport to the Philippines is Manila Padel Club.
