The cinemas are slowly coming back into the lives of many Filipinos. With the announcement that on November 10, the cinemas are once again open, many cinephiles and casual movie-goers rejoiced that their once beloved pastime is accessible again.

Of course, the theaters aren’t fully back to their usual self, they have implemented safety protocols to prevent the spread of the virus, such as one seat apart, regular cleaning after each screening, installation of new air filters, face masks should be on at all times, and no eating and/or drinking while inside the cinemas. Sure, it is definitely exciting that we can all go back to the magical world of watching the latest (and delayed) movies, but of course, in order to get back to the full swing of things, moviegoers would have to go through to ensure absolute safety in the following months to come.

With the advent of new vaccinations for 12 - 18 year-olds and new vaccine booster shots, it is safe to say that in 2022, the theaters will be fully bright and full of people again. Until the new year comes, 2022 is hyping to be one of the exciting years to come back to theaters and the lineup of incredible movies to be released soon.

We have compiled a list of 10 upcoming movies that are slated to arrive on the big screen in 2022 in the country. Some of the upcoming movies 2022 Philippines listed here were supposed to be released originally in 2020 but were postponed due to the pandemic and/or given reshoots to better suit the film, according to their directors, writers, and producers.

Upcoming Movie Releases 2022 Philippines:

the batman

1. The Batman

What else can you say about this film, apart from it being another “Batman” film. On the surface, it is, but it hasn’t been done like this for another adaptation of the caped crusader. This focuses on another storyline in the long-running comic book character, specifically the “Year One” story, that highlights the rough beginnings of the dark knight. Unlike the usual adaptations of Batman, in either the animated form or the previous live-action actors portraying him, being calculated, intelligent, and strongly enforcing his “no-kill” policy. This story portrays him as ruthless and vengeful, still finding his footing into this vigilante lifestyle as a young Batman.

The first trailer proved to be promising and showcases the mood that Batman fans have been dying to see on the big screen. It shows Robert Pattinson in probably another excellent role as Bruce Wayne and more in-depth detective work than ever before. Much like the announcement of Heath Ledger’s Joker and Ben Affleck’s Batman, Patinsson also received his fair share of mixed reception to his casting, but he proved them wrong during his on-screen footage in the trailers. Everyone is promising in this film, from Paul Dano being cast as the more serial killer inspired, Riddler, Jeffrey Wright as Commissioner Gordon, Andy Serkis’ Alfred, the trusty butler and surrogate father of Bruce, Zoe Kravitz’s Catwoman, and the unrecognizable Colin Farrel as the Penguin. The all-star cast is shaping to be another fantastic portrayal of these beloved characters.

The director, Matt Reeves, who directed the excellent two sequels in the Planet of the Apes trilogy and the unique sci-fi flick, Cloverfield, helms this film and showcases his signature style onto the screen and many fans and critics are praising its cinematography immediately.

This is one of the highly anticipated movies ever since its first trailer dropped back in 2020. It was supposed to be released in 2021, but after production delays, it was pushed back to March 2022. This is another superhero movie that a lot of moviegoers have gotten excited and eager to see another take on Batman.

2. Ghostbusters: Afterlife

Ghostbusters: Afterlife is another attempt at the franchise, but this one is different. Unlike the terrible 2016 Ghostbusters reboot film, this one is a definitive sequel to the two Ghostbusters films from the 80s. What is truly promising is that this film is helmed by Jason Reitman, son of Ivan Reitman who directed the first two movies. From the trailer itself, it oozes the style that Ghostbusters is known for and feels like a nostalgic throwback to the 1980s.

The film takes place 32 years after Ghostbusters II and centers around a family who happens to be related to Egon Spengler, one of the original Ghostbusters team, and moves into his estate in the middle of nowhere to have a fresh start on their lives, until they discover that their new home houses something spooky. The film stars Mckenna Grace, Finn Wolfhard, and Paul Rudd, all of which have garnered significant critical reviews for their performances in their numerous roles across their filmography.

The film is dedicated also to the late Harold Ramis, who portrayed Egon Spengler and this movie serves as a perfect homage to his character and brings together a whole new generation of audiences to this unique 80s pop culture hit and may win the hearts again of the original Ghostbusters fans.

The film will arrive in Philippine theaters this January 26, 2022.

Killers of the Flowermoon

3. Killers of the Flower Moon

Killers of the Flower Moon is based on the book that documents the real-life murders of the Osage tribe, a group of Native Americans living in Oklahoma in the 1920s. The director tackling this adaptation is none other than Martin Scorsese himself. This iconic director needs no introduction on how monumental his award-winning films are to the industry (Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, Goodfellas, The Wolf of Wall Street, Shutter Island, Hugo, Casino, The Irishman, and Silence).

Starring in this intriguing film is Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert De Niro, in which the two actors have separately collaborated with Scorsese across his filmography. Although DiCaprio and De Niro worked together in other films, for the first time, they are working together in a Scorsese movie, who is known to have mature and dark themes in his work.

This is shaping to be another Oscar-nominated film and may invite over people who are into real-life cases involving conspiracies and murder. The film is set to be released sometime soon in 2022.

Sonic The Hedgehog 2

4. Sonic the Hedgehog 2

Everyone was shocked at how enjoyable Sonic the Hedgehog movie adaptation truly is. After an initial trailer showcased the terrible design of this iconic video game character and the studio delaying the movie to fix it, the movie turned out to be a great time in the movies.

Adapting a video game into the big screen is a daunting task and most efforts turned out to be terrible or mediocre at best, with only a few shining examples that give respect to the source material and deliver a great story (e.g. 1995’s Mortal Kombat, Arcane: League of Legends, Castlevania, and Detective Pikachu). The first film joined the ranks of those gems and the sequel is shaping up to be an exciting one.

It will take place after the events of the first film, following the post-credits showing Tails as the next character to join Sonic and the exciting announcement that Idris Elba will voice Knuckles. As usual in the video games, Dr. Robotnik, played by the loveable Jim Carrey, will continue to chase after Sonic and try to act out his villainous plans to rule the world.

The movie is set to be released in April 2022.

5. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness

Phase Four of the Marvel Cinematic Universe is an exciting time for Marvel. This is what fans of the comics and movies have been waiting for, as Marvel and Disney started embracing the unique and weird storytelling of the comics and finally bringing in the element of the multiverse is going to change the landscape of superhero movies moving forward.

This 2nd Doctor Strange film will take place after the events of the two MCU shows on Disney+, WandaVision, and the first season of Loki. Since the storylines of those two shows build the foundations of the later MCU films, especially the latter in opening the multiverse arc for this movie and for Spider-Man: No Way Home, this movie is going to be insane and “bonkers” as described by Elizabeth Olsen, who plays Wanda Maximoff / Scarlet Witch after working on the set.

The film marks the return of Sam Raimi into directing a Marvel movie and a horror movie after his last directorial film, Oz the Great and Powerful back in 2013. Sam Raimi is known to have directed the Tobey Maguire Spider-Man trilogy, the amazing Evil Dead trilogy, and Drag Me to Hell, so he is perfect for the level of madness and terror for this next entry into the MCU. His style would blend well into this source material and will still retain the quirks that he showcased in his Evil Dead films that balance horror, dread, and comedy moods excellently.

The movie will arrive in theaters in May 2022, after numerous delays in production and shifting in the roster of MCU films.

top gun

6. Top Gun: Maverick

This is a sequel to another pop-culture movie from the 1980s and just like its predecessor, this movie will showcase the love for fighter aircraft and the U.S. Military. Top Gun wasn’t necessarily known for its story, as it is plainly simple in its approach and structure, and most audiences praised the movie for its soundtrack and stunt work.

Knowing Tom Cruise for his on-camera and death-defying stunts, he once again brought his talent and skill for this film for actually flying the aircraft shown on film. So, this is no doubt a cinematic experience and worth seeing it on the big screen, especially in IMAX, for the visual spectacles and that juicy audio design for the planes and soundtrack. And yes, Kenny Loggins’ iconic “Danger Zone” song used in the first film, will return again for the sequel.

The film will be released in theaters in May 2022.

7. John Wick: Chapter 4

Keanu Reeves returns once again as the titular deadly hitman and dog lover in the 4th entry in the John Wick series. After the events of the 3rd film, the stakes are even higher than before and John Wick is ready to do whatever it takes and channel his skills to battle his way to get his revenge with the High Table.

As always, the film will best its previous stunts and incredible camerawork and choreography with the addition of world-class martial arts legends, Donnie Yen, Hiroyuki Sanada and Scott Adkins. John Wick has to channel his inner Neo to overcome his hand-to-hand combat opponents.

black adam

8. Black Adam

This movie has been in development for a long time now and it has finally gotten a definitive release date in 2022. Black Adam is one of DC’s strongest characters and one of the villains of the Justice League, most specifically, Shazam’s archvillain.

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson stars as the titular character, Black Adam, and he is perfectly cast for the role, as throughout the years he has been working out to the bone to get in the godly shape for his character. A teaser was shown in DC Fandom last October 2021, using the footage shot for the film and it was praised for what the film would be hyping up its epic action sequences and expanding the DC world in live-action.

Also starring in this movie is Pierce Brosnan (Goldeneye, Die Another Day, Mamma Mia) as Doctor Fate, Aldis Hodge (Straight Out of Compton, The Invisible Man, Hidden Figures) as Hawkman, and Noah Centineo (To All The Boys I Loved Before) as Atom Smasher.

The film will be released in July 2022.

Spiderman Into the Spiderverse

9. Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse 2

This is a no-brainer that the excellent Into The Spider-Verse gets a follow-up. The first film was a tremendous success, critically lauded as one of the best-animated feature films (also winning the Oscar award in 2018), and perfectly captures what a Spider-Man comic can truly be in the later storylines. This also marks the big-screen debut of Miles Morales, the next successor in the several versions of Spider-Man.

This film continues on the growing relationship between Miles and Gwen Stacy’s Spider-Woman in another adventure into the Spider-Verse and the movie will also feature the 1970’s Japanese Spider-Man for good measure. Details about the plot haven’t been released yet, but one of the film’s producers, Amy Pascal, mentioned that this will be the “launching pad” for more Spider-Man animations and the spin-off focusing on the generations of Spider-Women, with Hailee Steinfeld returning as a version of Gwen, another Spider-Woman, and Silk.

The film is tentatively scheduled for October 2022.

Lightyear

Source: Pixar, Walt Disney Studios

10. Lightyear

This was an unexpected announcement. Lightyear focuses on the titular character’s in-universe origins, not how the toy was made since that story was explored in the Toy Story franchise. This movie is portrayed as what if we will see Buzz Lightyear as a franchise movie series, as seen within the Toy Story universe.

According to the film director, Angus MacLane, this is the movie that Andy has seen in the first Toy Story movie that got him very interested in purchasing Buzz in the first place. The trailer has garnered interest in the spin-off film as it was pictured as if it is your typical fun sci-fi romp, akin to serialized science-fiction comics, Star Wars and Star Trek.

Starring in the movie is Chris Evans (Captain America, The Gifted, Scott Pilgrim vs. The World) as Buzz Lightyear and alongside him is the talented director-actor Taika Waititi (Thor: Ragnarok, What We Do in the Shadows, Jojo Rabbit, Hunt for the Wilderpeople)

The film is scheduled for release in June 2022.
