Looking for career inspiration? Here is a list of inspiring movies to watch with good career lessons.

1. The Social Network

The film is a masterclass of its own. Acclaimed director, David Fincher (Se7en, Fight Club, Zodiac, Gone Girl, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button) and acclaimed writer, Aaron Sorkin (Moneyball, Steve Jobs, A Few Good Men, The Trial of the Chicago 7, The West Wing), team up for this retelling of how Facebook was founded and created by Mark Zuckerburg and the following drama that ensued for Facebook’s eventual staple into the social media society we live in today.

Although the movie is mixed with fictional scenarios and warped accounts to create a Hollywood-ized retelling, this movie packs a punch to inspire the audience to create another internet start-up empire in the comfort of their homes or school dorms. Aaron Sorkin is truly the core of why this movie was nominated and won several accolades and many critics debated on The Social Network being the best movie of the 2010s.

The dialogue is so crisp and beautifully written. If action movies highlight the pulse-pounding shootouts or fist-to-fist fights as the exciting moments in their genre, Aaron Sorkin’s “action” is the rapid dialogue of wit and realistic depiction of heightened tension of two people or more interrupting each other’s thoughts and words. Adding to that genius of writing and pace of his storytelling is David Fincher’s direction. The usage of colors and his lead on the cinematography paints the bleak backdrops of offices to the tense moments in the battle of corporate lawyers for this staple of modern social connection.

The acting also as well is superb by Jesse Eisenberg, Andrew Garfield, and Justin Timberlake. Each of them plays their real-life counterparts well, mixing in the excellent drama and dialogue unfolding on the screen. There is something about the two geniuses, one behind the screenplay and behind the camera that creates a fictional and real telling of the “Facebook” company biopic that makes it exciting and the pace is so rapid and inspires truly the next big genius of this era.

The Social Network is a remarkable work of film and how the corporate business is really cutthroat and scary that getting your passion project off the ground is really long and hard. When you get to the peak of success, the trust and loyalty of your true friends matter in the long run, and building a business with them is one of the best things that you can do together. Uplifting one another and keeping your morals abound.

2. The Pursuit of Happyness

Unlike The Social Network which mixes the occasional Hollywood drama into the biopic, The Pursuit of Happyness is as close to the real-life account of Chris Gardner, and how he fought hard to triumph over his hardships and found “happiness.”

The entire movie is an emotional rollercoaster and teaches the lesson that in any circumstances, your skills and determination to survive and earn a living is what matters, especially when you are a family man/woman that would do anything for their children. This is essentially adulting life in a nutshell. The road to success isn’t easy and even with your skills and smart intellect, life can really throw a curveball at you.

The movie also delivers on some top-notch acting by Will Smith and solidifies himself as one of the versatile actors during this decade. After moving on from primarily comedic roles such as his excellent series, The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, and summer blockbuster hits like Men in Black, Independence Day, and Bad Boys, Will Smith truly brings his A-Game to dramatic effect here.

His real-life son, Jaden, plays Chris Gardner’s son in this movie, and his innocence amongst the real terrors of adulthood and job hunting to great effect as well. The movie as a whole is an uplighting reminder of what you are truly fighting for to achieve successes like financial stability, a great job where your true passions lie, and above all else, the elated feeling of true happiness in life.

3. The Wolf of Wall Street

What else there is to say about this monumental film in the portfolio of one of the greatest directors ever, Martin Scorsese. This still follows Scorsese’s trademark style: an up-and-coming protagonist, with great skills and ambition for the road to success, they succeed in it only for it to fall after being corrupted by their lust for power and within the area of success. And the movie is based The film is fantastically directed and truly an R-Rated hit for breaking the film record of most swear words said on screen, which, ironically, beats Goodfellas, also directed by Scorsese.

Everyone acted amazingly – Leonardo DiCaprio, Jonah Hill, Jon Bernthal, Margot Robbie, and so many more supporting actors had tremendous fun being a part of this film. The pacing is top-notch and the cinematography is gorgeous as ever and Scorsese mentioned that this is the first time that he utilized purely digital cameras when shooting this project. Because he always relied on film cameras and it was efficient enough to shoot the two-hour and forty-minute runtime of the pursuit of that glamorous and corporate lifestyle of Wall Street and other similar central business districts around the world.

Sure, this may sound like the opposite of being “inspiring” but take in the other valuable things that can be salvaged here into the path of the righteous. For instance, the art of selling and conversation is the crux of the many reasons why this movie is beloved by many. Wall Street is a staple of the American economy and home to many stock market brokerage firms. Selling is the art here and how to convince a client to buy and choose you as their trusted agent.

This works in any industry that involves “selling,” especially when you have a product and/or service to offer to the general public. The confidence in selling is what matters and really, the thrill of closing a sale is one of the best feelings in your career. Because it shows that you are strong in communication and marketing your brand.

The Wolf of Wall Street simply shows one of the paths when you start following the money trail and still, in some way, it is sort of inspiring of what success can bring you and it is up to now on how you would use it in your career.

4. Moneyball

Moneyball is another film written by the amazing Aaron Sorkin, well co-written, as he was hired for rewrites to the script midway into production, but nonetheless adds more depth and great pacing to the retelling of this true story.

The film tackles an in-depth look into deep strategies and analytical methods to create an effective turnaround performance for a baseball team, which is composed of an undervalued talent pool of players. What is heavily praised here is the screenplay, which was adapted from the book of the same subject matter, and mostly, the film frames a meticulous amount of scenes of statistics, analysis, and lots of strategizing and business deals, and yet, does it in an entertaining way and at a great pace.

What major lesson to take away from this amazing film, which is just taking place in the backdrops of a baseball stadium for the majority of the runtime, is how you put value into the outcome of properly analyzing the situation and trying to make do with what you have to great usage. Since the team focused on this movie has a limited budget for managing its player base, it is a great lesson in being efficient and careful with your decision-making for your strategies. This mindset can easily be applied to your business and inspires anyone to make great decisions after much need analysis.

5. Jerry Maguire

Jerry Maguire is the only film here that isn’t based on a true story or events, merely imitating real-life scenarios and events into this very wholesome film. Yes, you may have heard of this film’s iconic quotes such as “Show me the money!” or “You complete me.” It leans on a traditional romance movie genre, as this movie was written and directed by Cameron Crowe (Fast Times at Ridgemont High).

The movie is excellently written and everything happens to be very natural in its direction and pacing. The acting of Tom Cruise is one of the unique things to arise after his early years. Not simply as the bonafide action hero, but the everyman and relies on his dramatic skills to ensure emotional feats. Cuba Gooding Jr., Renee Zellweger, Jonathan Lipnicki all do a fantastic job as the other main characters and the whole romp is entertaining, heartfelt, and most of all, inspiring.

However, the whole plot of the movie is centered on Tom Cruise’s character, who is a sports agent, essentially the representative for any player in any given sport, but the NFL is the major sports focus here. Tom Cruise’s character has an epiphany after a major incident occurs that kickstarts the entire plot of the movie. Instead of being a representative of a lot of clients, he chooses to have few clients and creates more personal relationships in order to properly maintain their partnership and the client’s performance. This is one of the main lessons that you can take into your career.

As a salesperson or real estate agent, sure, you will have few clients. But, nurturing your relationship, causes them to stick to you for the long run and inevitably, attracts more clients to avail of your service. Sometimes, quality over quantity is better and produces more quality output, and strengthens your bottom line. It is always a mutual understanding between two parties that produces a long-term benefit, which is the important thing to networking and building meaningful connections with people.
