How To Get Started with Urban Gardening
by Anna Lucas
Urban Gardening is nothing new to the Philippines. Remember the aloe vera plants with the egg shells that used to line up probably every household. Or remember when our grandparents used to just get the kamote tops or the malunggay from the backyard. Having a garden at your home is not only pleasing to the eyes but also beneficial for you. No matter how small your garden is, having greens in your house lessens your stress.
Starting a garden in your home in Lakefront is easy. You can do it even if you do not have any background nor
experience in Gardening. Below are steps on how to get started with your own garden.
Step 1: Find the perfect place for your garden
You don’t need a big space to start your garden. You can have a garden outdoors and even indoors such as the roof, or the balcony. What you do need is an area that will give your plants sun exposure for around 6 hours, and will give them good ventilation. Sun exposure is important since this will make your plants healthy while sufficient breeze will allow the water to evaporate readily during the day.
Step 2: Choose the garden you want to grow
You can choose what kind of garden you want to do. You can have a flower garden to add beauty to your house. You
can have a herb garden to add flavor to your cooking. You can even plant vegetables for your home. You can also have a little bit of everything.
Step 3: Raise the right plants
If this is your first time at gardening, then you should start with plants that are easy to grow. Herbs for beginners
include mint, basil and oregano. For vegetables , you can choose to plant lettuce, or okra. Tomatoes, garlic and onions are also fairly easy to grow.
Step 4: Get the Right Soil and Right Container
You can actually get lost with all the pointers about getting the right soil for your plants. It is best to ask your local seller of the best gardening soil for the plants you want to plant. Be sure to also ask about the container. Some plants can grow in pots at the beginning but needs to be transferred to a bigger container later on.
Step 5: Give Lots of Tender Loving Care
Finally, bear in mind that plants are also living things. For your urban garden to bloom and grow, you need to give them love and attention. Don’t forget to water them but not drown them. Check if they are getting enough sunlight. Guard them from pests, or treat them if needed.
